#MusicMondays | I Can Go the Distance

When you first think of the term “inspirational and uplifting music” You think of your old stand by’s. Songs like, Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and The Waves or Happy by Will Pharrell. Maybe some song you’ve heard when you were young and its just stuck with you over the years. That’s the typical case for me. It’s pretty difficult to find uplifting songs that aren’t either cliché, or just down right awful, so with many hours of research (AKA. Sitting in my bedroom listening to all of my music), I’ve come up with a few inspirational and if you will, happy songs.

I’m going to focus on one song per blog post, so I can really get down to the core of it. I may (in future posts) delve into the lyrics, instrumentals, the meaning, and if it has a back story, perhaps I’ll dip into that as well. I’m going to start with a Disney song! I figured I’d do this song, because who doesn’t love Disney, right? The song is called I Can Go the Distance and it’s from the movie Hercules.

In this scene of the movie (for those of you who haven’t seen it), Hercules hasn’t quite hit his growth spurt yet and he’s feeling extremely out of place. I’m sure almost everybody can relate to this in someway or another; perhaps school, work, home life, or even just in your own body. Maybe you could be feeling useless, like your life isn’t going anywhere and you’re stuck in a rut. The first verse goes I “have often dreamed of a far-off place where a great warm welcome will be waiting for me. Where the crowds will cheer when they see my face and a voice keeps saying, this is where I’m meant to be”. Pretty straight forward, right? It’s pretty normal for anybody to feel out of place. I, personally, feel out of place more often than not. But does the end of the song talk about how Hercules is giving up and has given in to this defeated feeling? No way! The whole way though it talks about how he keeps his chin up and moves forward, determined to get where he wants to go!

Never give up on your dreams, because everybody (And I mean EVERYBODY) can get where they want to go with a little hard work and determination. The results might not show right away, and you might have to battle a few mythological beasts, but by the time you get there, you’ll look back on everything and just see it as a fantastic story to tell to your friends and family.

I’m basically just a die hard fan of old music and a firm believer that music will take part in healing the world. I graduate high school this year and I have absolutely no idea what direction my life will take me in but I’m trusting God and following His lead. I’m beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to write a few guest posts and share a little about my passion! So grab a cup of tea, settle down, stay a while, and enjoy your read!
