Happy Mother’s Day!

“To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power.

Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.”

— Maya Angelou

Today is Mother’s Day, and Defying Shadows wants to wish every Mother a very happy day, full of fun, smiles, laughter and memories. To celebrate this day, each member of Defying Shadows wrote a short tribute to their mother to share how special our mothers are to us!

It’s true what they say, that your mom is your first best friend. My mom certainly was that until the day she left for Heaven nearly 19 years ago. But the impression she left on my life for the first 26 years of it were profound and lasting. My mom made sure we prayed and were prayed for. She was my rock through broken hearts and a broken body when I developed Crohn’s disease at age 18. Though she lived what we’d consider a simple life, being a stay-at-home wife and mother, she was revered, mighty, and devoted. I miss that she didn’t live to see my children. They missed out on an amazing grandmother. I regret that I couldn’t let her know how much I appreciate her sacrifice and reasoning now that I am a mother and can understand her better. She has helped shaped me and every day, her Godly influence and example play into my life. Thank you, Mom, for all you were to us and continue to be. Happy Mother’s Day in Heaven.  Love, Melanie

The relationship I have with my mom is something I truly cherish. Not only has she been at the birth of all my children, but, even with the 700 miles between us, she visits every few months. Her grandchildren are extremely important to her and she makes a real effort to get to know, spend time with, and spoil each one. Her determination to keep going despite difficult trials in her life is inspiring, and I could only hope to emulate her strength and courage. She’s my biggest ally, my trustworthy adviser, and my closest friend;
and I don’t know what I’d do without her.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!

Mum, no matter how many times I say thank-you, it doesn’t seem like enough. You have helped me through all of my struggles and held my hand as I took my road to recovery. You were there every step of the way, and without your love, guidance, and support I wouldn’t be where I am today. You have been through all my ups and downs with me and have taught me so many things that you may not even realise. When I become a Mum one day, I hope to be half the woman and mother you are. I love you. Xxx

I don’t know where I would be today without my mom. When I think about my mom I think of these words: strength, beauty, faith and love. My mom helped shape me into the woman I am today. She has been a true role model to not only me but to other young woman. Whenever there are hardships she has always taught me not to give up and to lean on the one we can trust the most—God, because He is always there with us through it all. Her faith and strength she shows by example is what helps keep me going.

This past year has sent us many hurdles; a lot of struggles and pain, but a lot of blessings and happiness. One thing I know for sure is that I would never have gotten through this year without my mom. When I was little I told my mom that I had a dream where all the Moms in the world were lined up, and I got to pick which mom I wanted to keep. I searched that line all night long until I found my mom, because she is the best mom I could ever ask for! Mom, you are my best friend. You help me through the hard days, listen to my random rants and hug me through my tears. You have helped me become the woman I am today, and I would never have gotten there without you. I love you so much! Happy Mother’s Day! Love, Nichole
