Shortsightedness seems to be a weakness of mine. It is interesting that we have a hard time trusting that things will work out when there are storms in our lives, but once we are through them, we often see the strength that grew because of them.
I once heard a story about scientists who were studying the growth and resilience of trees in a perfect environment. They could control the amount of water and sunlight the trees received, and yet found that the trees were not thriving. What were they missing? Wind! They found that trees needed to have resistance so that their roots could grow deep!
I have known my fair share of storms and wind in life, and as I contemplate all of the amazing things I am thankful for in this season, I find myself thankful for those hard times! My roots have grown deep, anchoring me, reminding me that there is more to life than what I see.
James 1: 2-7 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”
When storms come, God gives us a precious opportunity to TRUST Him. I may not be able to change my shortsightedness, but I can choose to trust the heart of God! When I choose to trust Him, He covers me with His peace, and I no longer need to shake my fist at the sky and wonder why He has allowed trial and tribulation to occur. He is more concerned about my growth than my comfort.
And I thank Him for it!
