Hello Everyone! And happy hump day! Today I will be talking about the different mental health care professionals and their role with treatment in terms of mental health.
Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the treatment and diagnosis of mental health. Psychiatrists, in comparison to psychologists, are able to prescribe medications.
Psychologists
A psychologists is a health care professional that evaluates and studies behaviour and mental processes. Typically, a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in psychology is required to become a psychologist. However, in some places, like Canada and the US, a doctorate is required.
Psychiatric Social Worker
A psychiatric social worker “provides services to mental health patients. They may offer therapy, social rehabilitation, crisis intervention or outreach services.”
Occupational Therapist
Occupational therapy is the “use of assessment and treatment to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and work skills of people with a physical, mental, or cognitive disorder.”
Recreational Therapist
Recreational therapy is a “treatment service designed to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities, to promote health and wellness as well as reduce or eliminate the activity limitations and restrictions to participation in life situations caused by an illness or disabling condition.”
Counsellors
“Counsellors help people to explore feelings and emotions that are often related to their experiences. This allows clients to reflect on what is happening to them and consider alternative ways of doing things.”
Alex Newton is a nursing student and mental health advocate. She grew up in a small town and plans on moving to London, England one day and open up her own health practice. She has a cat named Maya who she adopted whilst going through some difficulties. She’s a daughter, sister, and warrior who enjoys a nice cuppa tea.
