How To Overcome A Gambling Addiction

Gambling isn’t something that I normal partake in. Mainly because I don’t have much luck. However, whether you have luck or not, it’s become evident that gambling addiction rates have increased over the last five years. Now, normally when someone says ‘gambling,’ card games (like poker), slot machines, lottery tickets, and scratch cards are what come to mind. However, bets – sporting bets more specifically , are also a form of gambling. By definition, gamble is to play games of chance for money; bet.

Similar to any other addiction, the act of gambling itself may not necessarily be the reasoning behind the need or desire to continue it, but rather the feeling one gets when they win or are successful (by their own definition.)

What are some of the considerations to keep in mind if you think you may have a gambling program?  Here are a few:

  • If you feel the need to be secretive about your gambling.
  • If you have trouble controlling your gambling.
  • If you gamble even if you don’t have money.
  • Or, if family and friends are worried about you.

What are some treatment options for a gambling addiction?

  • Gambling Anonymous
  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy

If you find yourself or a loved one who has a gambling addiction struggling, here are a few tips to help with gambling urges:

  •  Reach out for support
  • Distract yourself by doing something else
  • Postpone gambling
  • Avoid Isolation
