Mental health is something that affects many people – that’s a known fact. What isn’t all that known is just how many of employees at any given job suffer from a mental illness – mainly because they’re often hidden.
I read this article the other day posted by Harvard Medical School that discusses how mental illness amongst employees being taboo not only affects the employees, but also the company the employee works for. The article talks about why employess are hesitant to seek treatment in the fear of losing their job (due to the economic status).
With that being said, people who have a mental illness already have a difficult time when it comes to speaking up and seeking help. So when it comes to the workplace, the fact that there’s a chance of jeopardizing their career/job adds more pressure to someone who’s already having difficulty. So why don’t we create a safe environment for those who are going through a difficult time?
There are many pros to having your employer know about your mental illness. However, please note, if you’re unsure if you want to disclose your illness (what your exact diagnosis is) with your employeer, just remember that you don’t have to give them the exact diagnosis. Just telling them you have a mental illness is just as effective. Now, by telling your employer, they’re able to better help you whenever you need it. It’s also nice to have someone there to check in on you.
