What to do when you’re not feeling the Christmas Spirit

With Christmas almost here, have you got to a point or been at the stage where your not really feeling the Christmas spirit? With Christmas feeling like it has been more commercialised each year and the stores bringing out the decorations out earlier and earlier, sometimes even as early as October, you can feel a sense that the real meaning of Christmas can be somewhat overwhelming and lost amongst all the hype.

So the question you may ask yourself is, what do you do when you’re not feeling the Christmas Spirit? Below are some tips for how to mentally prepare for the holidays:

  • Shopping Crowds

There is nothing worse than being bowled over by the crowds of people buying last minute gifts or grocery shopping. Try buying your Christmas presents at local independent shops or local producers in your area. There will be less people than at the major shopping centre nor will it be as crowded as the major shopping centre. Also try and alternate your shopping times as well during the Christmas period. Don’t feel like your compelled to be at the shops at 9.00am in the morning when the doors open. If the shopping centres have extended opening hours, look at shopping later in the afternoon or evening. Alternatively if you want to avoid the crowds altogether, look at shopping online for your gifts and groceries. By doing this you alleviate having to leave the house and fight the crowds, and you will save time.

  • Christmas decorations

Although it can be tough time of the year even if your not feeling the Christmas spirit, but try decorating your house with some Christmas decorations. It doesn’t matter if you a house full of children or just on your own, try to enjoy the Christmas season. Even if its just putting up the Christmas tree with some tinsel, lights and a star or just a wreath on the front door. It does not need to look over the top but sometimes as the saying goes less is more, and in some cases it can look much better than going over the top.

  • Christmas Church Services

Christmas Eve services are special celebrations that are rich in tradition and history, and will help you be filled with love and joy. Check out the times of the Christmas service with your local church to see when they will be running.

  • Christmas Presents

When we read the bible about the very first Christmas, the gifts that were given to Jesus by the three wise men were gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Sadly it’s become all about having that new game or jewellery piece and not the tradition and meaning behind what Christmas really is. Remember when buying Christmas presents for loved ones try and buy small but meaningful gifts regardless of whether you expect anything in return. Make it something meaningful and something symbolic of your relationship and love.

  1. Thanks for sharing this Amanda. There’s a lot of very wise advice contaiined in one you wrote. I remember one year when I was doing a counselling course and we were finishing for the Christmas holidays, the teacher wished us all a happy Christmas and said, “And if Christmas isn’t something that you look forward to remember that when all’s said and done it’s really only one day. I thought that was good advice for those who find Christmas hard.
