And about the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Do not fear, for you have borne a son.” But she did not answer, nor did she regard it.

1 Samuel 4:20

When I first read this verse it didn’t make a lot of sense to me. When I read it a few weeks later, it brought tears to my eyes. I realized that this woman decided that if she couldn’t live among the glory of God that she didn’t want to live at all. It’s like being at the best birthday party ever but because the one person you expected to show up didn’t, the night is ruined. It doesn’t matter that you have the best gifts, cake or the prettiest decorations. The party is ruined and to be truthful, it can be over. The proceeding verses tell us that the woman was married to one of Eli’s son’s, Phinehas. Phinehas was not living his life according to the word of God. Since he was out of the will of God, he missed out on the glory and ultimately lost his life. His actions didn’t only affect his life but the life of those who were surrounded by him as well. Our actions are a reaction for those attached to us. When we make a decision or a choice that hinders the glory of God from showing up, everything we do will fail and the relationships we’re nurtured will soon die.

The most amazing experience was happening for this woman yet she had no joy. Her husband was dead. Her father in law was dead and spiritually, so was she. It didn’t matter to her that she was bringing a new life into the world. The fact that God’s glory was nowhere around took away her joy and ultimately her life. She had no connection to life without the presence of God’s glory. The same thing is true for us today. Without God’s glory or His presence, this life has no meaning. If God isn’t going to be a part of my life it’s truly not worth living. His glory is what gives me life. It gives me hope and it gives me joy. There’s no way I can live a happy, peace-filled life of abundance without God’s glory. I need Him to walk this journey of life. Without His presence or His glory my spirit will not survive. I need the glory of God to permeate through my soul, to give me life. Without His glory life isn’t worth living.
